Rohr drops Mikel against Guinea

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr will make as many as three changes to the Super Eagles starting lineup for the game against Guinea.

From the starting lineup for the game against Burundi, which the team won 1-0 Rohr will add Chidozie Awaziem to the defence line following his impressive showing after coming on for Shehu Abdullahi, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

In the midfield, the biggest casualty will be captain of the team John Obi Mikel who will likely drop to the bench with Ahmed Musa taking his place in the starting lineup although the trio of Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo will play as the midfield three.

Mikel struggled to impress in the number ten role for the Super Eagles in the 1-0 win over Burundi with Alex Iwobi who moved into his position after his substitution playing a lot better than he did while on the pitch.

The captain is 99% not sure of starting against Guinea with coach Gernot Rohr set to retain the trio of Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo as his midfielders.

Iwobi will occupy the number ten role with Etebo behind him while Ndidi who was voted the man of the match against Burundi playing as the defensive midfielder just in front of the back four.

In attack, Paul Onuachu  will make way for match winner against Burundi Odion Ighalo for the game against Guinea and he is expected to lead the line alongside Musa with the Eagles set to attack from the get go.

Already the team have been training with this lineup in the last two sessions and it looks the most likely the same team that will start the game against Guinea today.

Gunmen kill Army Garrison Commander in Bauchi

Suspected gunmen have reportedly killed the Garrison Commander, 33 Artillery Brigade of Nigerian Army in Shadawanka Barracks, Bauchi State, Mohammed Barack.

According to reports, the incident which took place on Bauchi – Jos Road was said to have taken place on Sunday while the deceased was riding a power bike from Kaduna.

A source said, “The Garrison Commander of 33 Artillery Brigade of Nigerian Army (Shadawanka Barracks) Bauchi, Col. Mohammed Barack, has been shot dead.

“He was shot on Sunday along Jos Road, while on a power bike and was coming back from Kaduna. He is from Kano State.”

The deceased, who hailed from Kano, was said to have been taken to his home state for burial, after the necessary military rites.

When contacted, the spokesperson of 33 Artillery Brigade, Yahaya Kabara, confirmed the incident saying, “Yes, it’s true.”

When asked to give details of what happened, Mr Kabara, who is an army major, told The Punch to “come to the Brigade because it is a matter that needs investigation.

“Investigation is ongoing, I will get back to you when the finding is out. Let me communicate with my Commander, I will get back to you.”

Nigeria Customs Service promotes officer who rejected $420k bribe

The Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), has promoted Comptroller Bashir Abubakar of Apapa Area Command to an Assistant Comptroller General (ACG).

Mr. Abubakar was the officer who, last year, rejected a $420,000 bribe handed over to him by a drug trafficking cartel, to take delivery of 41 smuggled containers of Tramadol. Abubakar refused the bribe and seized the consignment.

Tramadol is a pharmaceutical product prohibited under Nigerian laws. The abuse of Tramadol is known to have dire health consequences among the population.

Buhari offer special prayers for late Shagari

NAN observed that before commencement of prayers which was led by the Chief Imam/Administrator of the National Mosque, Prof. Shehu Galadanchi, Buhari met with members of the Shagari family where he consoled them over the loss.

The president also presented a letter of Condolence to the family which was read by Tambuwal, who also shared the same car with the president during the condolence visit.

The Chief Imam prayed almighty Allah to grant the soul of the former Nigerian president a peaceful resting place in Paradise.

The president had on Saturday paid tribute to the late former president, and directed that the national flag and other flags should fly at half-mast in military and para-military formations as well as public buildings for three days, starting from today.

“The late President represented almost the last link with the government of our founding fathers under Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. He was also the first elected President of Nigeria.

“The late Alhaji Shagari was a man of many parts, teacher, local authority administrator, politician, minister, and finally President. He served his country with dedication and moderation.

“Over the years through interaction at the Council of State, he and I came to understand and appreciate each other whatever the differences we may have had in the past.

“On behalf of the Federal Government, myself and family, I send my condolences to the people of Nigeria, particularly to the late President’s family and the government and people of Sokoto State. May his soul rest in peace.”

Alhaji Bala Shagari, the eldest son of the deceased had on behalf of the family, expressed appreciation to Buhari for the visit amid his busy schedule.

The remains of the former president, who died at the age of 93 on Friday at the National Hospital Abuja, was laid to rest at his village, Shagari on Saturday, according to Islamic rites.

Shagari was president from 1979 to 1983 and won the presidential election for the second time before he was dethroned by a coup d’état that brought in Muhammadu Buhari as military head of state.

2019 – I’ll dismantle Lekki Toll Gate if elected – Jimi Agbaje

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, has vowed to remove the Lekki Toll Gate, if voted into power in 2019. Agbaje described the fee being collected at the toll gate as illegal.

The PDP guber candidate noted that though the toll gate was built by a concessionaire, it had since been bought over by the Lagos State Government.

He wondered why residents were still being forced to pay tolls to pass.

Agbaje was responding to the one-hour toll-free passage recently given to all motorists by his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Agbaje said, “Unfortunately, the toll gate is opaque because no one knows its financial records. So, asking people on your campaign trail and others to pass without paying for just one hour is absurd and regrettable.

“Good road is a fundamental right of citizens and we promise to deliver on this and many other things.

“At the moment, most Lagos roads are impassable because of their poor condition. Now, motorists are compelled to pay heavily for passage.

“How about the so-called alternative routes? Ideally, government should have provided alternative routes to the Lekki Toll Gate, but the available alternate route is in a terrible shape, so everybody is forced to use the toll gate and pay.

“Therefore, yesterday’s drama by the governorship candidate of the APC is a farce. Nobody was deceived by the party’s action which also smacks of disrespect and bondage.”

World Bank: Buhari asked us to focus on Northern Nigeria

The President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, said on Thursday that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request.

Kim and the Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, United States, also advised Buhari to invest in things that would enhance economic growth.

Kim said, “You know, in my very first meeting with President Buhari he said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we’ve done that. Now, it has been very difficult. The work there has been very difficult.

“I think Nigeria, of course, has suffered from the dropping oil prices. I think things are just now getting better. But the conversation we need to have with Nigeria, I think, is in many ways related to the theme that I brought to the table just this past week, which is investment in human capital. The percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that Nigeria spends on healthcare is less than one percent.”

He added, “Despite that, there is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country, and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices. Nigeria has to think ahead and invest in its people. Investing in the things that will allow Nigeria to be a thriving, rapidly growing economy in the future is what the country has to focus on right now.”

Kim also said, “Focusing on the northern part of Nigeria, we hope that as commodity prices stabilize and oil prices come back up, the economy will grow a bit more. But very, very much important is the need to focus on what the drivers of growth in the future will be.”

According to the World Bank boss, the bank will invest in human capital in other parts of Africa in order to prepare the continent for the next phase of growth.

Lagarde, in her remarks, said Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria, had posted suboptimal growth in recent times.

The growth figures, she said, were far too small considering the huge demographic potential of Nigeria and other countries in the region.

As a result, she said the IMF would be engaging ministers of finance and central bank governors from the region attending the annual World Bank and IMF meetings on how they could boost and stabilise economic growth.

Lagarde said, “The Sub-Saharan Africa is one region of the world where growth is suboptimal. Those countries grow at an average growth of 2.5 per cent. That is too low for the demographic expansion of the region.”

JAMB fix Cut-Off Marks for Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has fixed minimum cut off marks for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria was set for 120, polytechnics and colleges of education pegged at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110.

Institutions are, however, at liberty to raise their cut off marks for admission above the minimum set by JAMB.

Also, admissions into public degree awarding institutions for the 2017 UTME examination will end on January 15, 2018 while for private institutions, it ends on January 31, 2018.

Also, decisions on first choice candidates by universities will end on October 15, and second choice candidates will end on December 15; after which the remaining students will be available in the market place for other institutions till the January closing dates.

These decisions were taken at the 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday.

The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, said a Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, will be used to streamline admission processes among institutions, as it addresses challenges associated with the former approach.

Mr. Oloyede also said that Institutions could conduct dual mode system which involves both manual and the newly introduced CAPS.

He advocated a dynamic educational policy as related to admissions.

“All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy,” he said. “JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.”

“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark.”

He said candidates’ applications to study agriculture was very low while applications to study medicine and health sciences increased.

Speaking on illegal admissions, he said the process is now automated because the Registrar of JAMB must approve all candidates.

“About 17,160 students were admitted without JAMB across institutions in Nigeria,” he said.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, also formerly announced a lift of the ban on the conduct of Post-UTME examination as a prerequisite for admission into tertiary institutions.

“Cancellation of Post- UTME is a mistake,” he said.

He noted that banning of post-UTME led to a lot of irregularities by candidates and some institutions.

The minister explained that with the lifting of the ban on the conduct of the examination, institutions are now at liberty to conduct, while adding that fee for the examination should not exceed N2000.

He explained that the 2016 admission process was a huge success, while expressing optimism that government is working assiduously to make that of 2017 better.

Mr. Adamu noted that government is also making efforts to expand access and ensure equality in the education sector.

He expressed optimism that a substantial number of candidates who sat for the 2017 UTME would gain admission into tertiary institution.

“Over 1.6 million candidates applied for degree courses, over 17,000 for ND as well as NCE,” he said.

The candidates whose names appear below were successful at the Nigerian Navy 2017 Recruitment Aptitude Test held on 12 August 2017. The candidates are to attend an interview at the Nigerian Navy Secondary Ojo, Lagos from Friday 25 August to Saturday 15 September 2017. News: FG shortlists 300,000 youths for capacity building in renewable energy, others

Nigeria’s youth unemployment, estimated at 40 million youths would soon drop as the Federal Government has short listed 300,000 youths for immediate training and engagement. 

The youths, drawn from the 36 States of the federation were short listed from a total of 2.5 million who applied for the programme this year. 

The Senior Special Adviser to the Presidency on Jobs Creation and Youths Empowerment, Afolabi Imokhuede, who confirmed the development, said the youths would be attached to reputable organisations with capacity to train them in areas such as renewable energy, oil and gas, construction and agriculture. 

According to him, the training would last for three months while attachment to organisations would last for about one year. 

He said that such organisations may grant some of them permanent employment, while others would have to form clusters to enable them offer professional services to operators in different sectors of the nation’s economy. 

The management of Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL) also disclosed that it would assist to train and build the capacity of youths in many areas, including oil and gas, fabrication and welding. 

The company disclosed this when the United State Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) its premises noted that has commended the Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL) as a safe haven for investment and having great capacity for job creation in the African sub-region. 

Investigations showed that the action of the government would go a long way towards complementing the efforts of the private sector to enhance capacity building and employment in the nation. 

It showed that many stakeholders have started to show interest in tackling the issues as a result of its negative impact on the nation’s economy.

Fix: Windows key and Cortana not working on Windows 10

So, if you have upgraded or installed the recent Windows 10 OS, you may have noticed some glitches on this OS. One of which for me is the frequent reboots which always reads "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart..." This can be so annoying. Although, I will not be talking about that issue today, the possible solution for that will be released in my later blog. And another glitch which I will be discussing is the one where the Windows Key, Cortana and all the Apps that came with Windows 10, just stops working.

Now, there is no doubt Windows 10 is the most coolest of the OS Windows have ever came up with, considering the Apps the OS comes with, but then this glitches will make you want to use hammer on your PC.

Recommended Fix Methods:

Method 1: Run Windows Update:

I will recommend this fix as the very first method to try out, this is because this fixed my PC after spending 8 hours trying other fixes.

How to run Windows Update: 

Go to your Desktop, look for an app "Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant". "Right-Click" and "Run as administrator". Follow the On-Screen Options till the process is complete. After Restart and Set-up, check you Windows Key and other Windows 10 Apps, this fixed it for me, but if not, then follow the next method.

Method 2: Deleting Dropbox

So many users reported that deleting Dropbox fixed the problem for them.

How to Delete Dropbox 

1. Press Windows Key + R and type appwiz.cpl. Press Enter run it.

2. Locate Dropbox on the list and choose Uninstall.
3. After Uninstalling Dropbox, restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

N-Power Update - Test Rescheduled

There is a new development on the NPower Programme currently going on.

The date of the test of Teach Applicants have been rescheduled to start on the 9th of August, 2017 and not 2nd August, 2017 as was earlier released by NPower Facebook Page.

So, all the Teach Applicants, take note of the new date and be ready.

Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) - List of Successful Candidates for the 2017 First Batch Conversion to Procurement Cadre

In continuation of the Bureau’s training programme for conversion into the Procurement Cadre which is designed to build institutional capacity as enshrined in Part II, Section 5(k) and (s) of the Public Procurement Act, 2007, and the decision of the Federal Government to create Procurement Cadre in the Federal Civil Service, a two (2) week procurement training for prospective procurement officers in Federal Parastatals, Agencies, Institutions and Commissions between 14th - 26th May, 2017 was conducted at the National Institute of Teachers, Kaduna, Kaduna State.

The list of successful candidates at the conversion examination held on Friday, 26th May,2017 is now available on the website of the Bureau. These candidates are to contact the Director, Research, Training & Strategic Planning Department, Bureau of Public Procurement, Abuja to collect their certificates from Monday 14th to Thursday 31st August, 2017. 

Candidates are expected to come with their office identity card for the collection of their certificates
